Round table discussion:

Internationalization, Step by step or Born Global?

Spotify and Skype are examples of firms that directly set out to reach a global market.  They are what we call “born globals”. Many born globals have a high growth potential. Therefore policy makers try to promote such firms. However, most new firms seem to prefer a slower internationalization process, if any. Why is that? What consequences does rapid international growth bring to a new firm? What are the advantages and drawbacks of growing internationally at a slower pace? Is rapid internationalization necessary in certain industries? Or is it all about management and aspirations? And, how do we better inform policy makers?

We will try to answer these questions, and many more!

Participants:
Frédéric Delmar, Professor in Entrepreneurship at Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship

Seminar:

What Determines the Initial Size of New Ventures?

Lecturers:
Associate Professor Timothy Folta, Purdue University
Francesca Melillo, Copenhagen Business School

Time: Thursday October 4, 13:00–15:00

Venue: Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship, Lund University School of Economics and Management, building Alfa 1, entrance floor, room 1072

About the seminar:
A central notion in entrepreneurship is the initial size of a firm, since it bears upon its future success. Prior work has found that entrepreneurs’ background characteristics impact start-up size. Yet, initial size is observed only when entry occurs, and the same individual-level characteristics are likely to determine the entry decision too. Existing research may misreport the determinants of initial size if: (1) it equates the entry decision with size decision, which ignores the possibility that entrepreneurs require different size thresholds to induce entry, and (2) it treats initial size as divorced from the entry process, which may be characterized by different types of entry (e.g. as spinout, de novo, hybrid entry). During the seminar Tim Folta will show that: (1) selection effects at entry cause endogeneity in the initial size of start-ups, and (2) prospect entrepreneurs have different size thresholds, depending on the type of entry.

SEPTEMBER

Seminar:

Elephant, where are you sailing the entrepreneurship?

Lecturer: Professor Matthias Fink, Vienna University of Economics and Business

Time: Thursday September 27, 13:00–15:00

Venue: Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship, Lund University School of Economics and Management, building Alfa 1, entrance floor, room 1072

About the seminar:
Entrepreneurship research has gone through an impressive development during the last decades. However, we know that entrepreneurship researchers are struggling to tap the full potential of this research field and to come up to the expectations which were raised during the start-up phase of this new discipline. Large shares of the research community feel uncomfortable with the gap between the external expectations and the statements we can formulate based on our findings. In the seminar Matthias Fink will provide results from a large scale self-evaluation of entrepreneurship researchers and compare these findings against the backdrop of other fields of management research. Further, Matthias will sketch possible strategies to compensate for some of the shortcomings of current entrepreneurship research. In both, the shortcomings and the possible solutions, Matthias will draw on examples from his own research.
